ImageNest is a simple little Mac program from BlueCubit that replaces clunky printing systems included in most graphics programs. If you have a file or a bunch of files and you want to lay them out on a page and print them, ImageNest is the way to go. It’s an economical solution that saves time and paper. Sorry Windows users, ImageNest relies on Apple software components so no Windows versions are planned.

The software has many of the features photographers purchase high end rips for: Nesting, Sizing, Cut Marks, Contact Sheets and Multiple File Printing.

Nesting is including multiple images on a single page; this is the flagship feature of the product. Nesting was something only the big prepress RIPS like Colorburst and Colorbyte had, now it’s in a simple to use software. Combining multiple images in Photoshop is extremely laborious and profiles get an extra unnessesary conversion. ImageNest has no problem with using multiple profiles on a single page. It simply converts each individually to the printing profile. When combining images on a single page, Photoshop must convert the profiles to a single page working space, then it can convert the pages color space to the printing space. Nesting multiple files with multiple color spaces is awesome!

Sizing and Cropping: Size(scale) and resize at will in ImageNest, the original file is untouched. In Photoshop you would need to use a smart object to do this without losing resolution. You can also crop and re-crop individual images. Sizing multiple images to get them on a page in Photoshop is definitely a lot more work. Print drivers can only size a single image. Sizing and resizing images without loss of quality rocks!

Cut Marks: When you get multiple images on a page, you’re likely to want to cut and trim the paper later. ImageNest can print cut marks on the paper wherever you need them to be. Cut marks are the cutting edge!

Multiple File Printing: Print multiple files quick and easy. ImageNest can force the print sizes and borders to all be the same for a multi print session. This is a huge time saver, just line em up and let em rip, super cool!

Of course all of this can be done by hand in Photoshop, but it’s so much faster and easier in PhotosNest. Laying out a page is incredibly simple: drag the images into the application, then size and arrange them as you like, and send it to the print driver. Setting things up to print the way you want really couldn’t be much easier.

ImageNest was designed by photographers for photographers. I’m one of the photographers who has given feedback on the product during development. I worked with Josh Lubbers who has an extensive background in color and Inkjet printing. Josh has worked for ICC development company Praxisoft and Colorburst which makes Epsons RIP software. He’s an enthusiastic printer with an innovative one of a kind product. Josh predicts that photographers using ImageNest will print more because it’s practical, easy, and economical.

This is version 1.o of ImageNest. I have some input on what’s planned for future versions: pairing Metadata with images and DNG preview printing for example. ImageNest is a Printing Technology for photographers that’s long overdue, in my opinion. Try it out, print more, and be happy.
